New Mexico City constitution rejects privatization of water services

January 16, 2017. The members of the legislative assembly that is currently drafting Mexico City’s new constitution voted in favor of maintaining the public status of the provision of local water services, according to press reports.

According to Mexican daily El Universal, the legislators voted to write article 21 of the new constitution so that its section B reads “water purification, distribution, and supply services, as well as sewage services, are to be provided by the local government through a public organ, and this service cannot be privatized.”
