Global Surface Water Explorer

global surface

December 2016. The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) developped the Global Surface Water Explorer.
This maps the location and temporal distribution of water surfaces at the global scale over the past 32 years and provides statistics on the extent and change of those water surfaces.
The Global Surface Water Explorer can be of immediate use for public administrations, researchers, NGOs, and anyone interested in changes in global surface waters.

The dataset, produced from Landsat Imagery (courtesy of the United States Geological Study and NASA) will support applications including water resource management, climate modelling, biodiversity conservation and food security.
